Sit down and write a list.

Pros and cons for moving & another for staying.

If you can advance your career and in the long run then I would move. You don't have to live in DC, move into the burbs where the crime rate is lower.

Obviously you have to do what you feel is best for you and your family....but I for one usually open the door when opurtunity knocks....best of luck either way...

WOW impressive offer, but if it were me I would have to think it over hard! How does the family feel about just up and going? How will the kids feel being pulled out of school to an area unknown even to their parents? You have an aweful lot of weight on your shoulders to think about. It sounds like a great opportunity, but if it were me I know I would pass.
Good luck on your decision....there's more to it then just making a few more bucks

Thats a tough call. What about looking for a different job in your current area? mabee u can find something comparable. It could be real tough on your kids depending on what grade there in. The younger the better. Also dont forget to factor in a difference in the cost of living.

Here's my advice, and this comes from working in the gov't.
If it's a gov't job w/ the DoD, not only will the pay be good but you'll have some serious opportunity. Not to mention having your clearance opens many a door that regular people can't get their foot into. BUT, if you're going to be taking a contractor position, it's going to be rough. Contractors aren't very well liked or respected from my experience. Either way, prepare yourself for the most Red Tape you've ever seen in your life. Sit down w/ your wife/family and think your options through. See where she stands on your ideas. Make a good decision together and you'll be alright.

Wow that was some good advice from the TSSB crew, as stated discuss w/ familia. Maybe start out with renting a room in somebodies house or a motel stay during working days then go home, that commute will get old fast & then U'll start hating it.

There R some very nice burbs north & west of DC + the riding down there, 1 hr west of DC, is awesome.

Good Luck

Yeah i know all about Govt red tape. I was in the Military for 8 Years. I do need to do alot of research on housing. If I do get the job I would be an Idiot to pass it up. Ive seen how fed employees have it made. so stressed right now.... Someone at work told me theres an amtrak train that goes to DC and it only takes 2 hours. I wonder how hard it would be to commute daily. It would only be wed-sat. How hard can that be?Hey 2 hours isn't bad to commute. It's not the end of the world to do. If you have to do it for a couple of months just to see if you like the idea and the job and the area, and if you feel it's safe enough to bring the family there. It may not be a bad idea to leave the family home while you commute, check things out and get a feel for it, then on a weekend bring them there to see it, and if you all like it, then while your wife is back home she can prepare the house for sale while you set up a place down there to buy. It takes a team effort and I give ya props just for thinking of them too rather than just yourself. Either way it's not an easy decision to make. Try to keep your head clear and weigh the goods and the bads. commuting 2 hours each way isn't the end of the world. Look at it as an adventure as well. I feel for you though, making life decisions are mind blowing, and always worried about the "what ifs" and the unknowns.
Don't drive yourself crazy for now til you hear an offer, when the time comes just simply have a plan and put it in motion and see how it goes. It would be ashame you move and bring the family and the whole 9 and you turn out not likeing the job and state after a few months.

You can't knock it til you try it! Just go by yourself and check it out. Get the vibe and see if its worth the move. Good Luck in whatever you decide!

this is a tough one.. but if you do get the job ( good luck by the way) try commuting first and get the feel of it, mayeb stay in a hotel while you are there and come home when you are off. also consider moving somewhere clsoer to DC but not DC. i fthe amtrak take syou two hours fomr your currne tlocation.. try going liek 1 hour closer to dc, this way you could still be close to here and close to your job( kinda meet half way)
yeah this is a tough call but the decision youwill make will be the right one.. also DC its self is bad but the suburbs are acually decent...just dont buy a crib in the hood
thik it trough...talk it over with the wife and family... hey my parets decided to move countires.. and here i am in the states :D ye sits rough at first but they will get used to it.. plus being layed off and living in the same place is worst than moving and advancing your career..
