well for beginners i never heard of Abit... :?
with my comparison Intel does'nt have AGP 8x or the IEEE 1394 in which u dont need
with the Intel u save 50.00 :D
with Intel u get all accessories and a 3 year warranty.... :rocker:
i always went with Intel, cuz i heard thats the best and i never had ANY problem neither but i would do sum research on Abit's Products..

if you just need something to run on, get the intel cuz its cheaper. if you're gaming and wanna mess with overclocking, the abit is more stable and easier to mess with. they usually have a softmenu BIOS, which allows you to just pick a cpu speed and run on it. no messing with core voltages or multipliers. I would always buy an abit over anything else

Yeah ABIT's are real easy to overclock and the Bios softmenu is awsome..
ABIT boards are usually rock solid.. I would go with them

Give me $1500 and I'll hook you up with an insane system!
This is off topic but can any of you guys build laptops? Or only desktops.

Only desktops. Your best bet is buying a slightly used laptop.

While your here let me knwo what you think:
I looked at avos comp yesterday. and heres what it does
We boot off the XP cd and go into windows setup, we erased all the partitions and created a new one and formatted it. Then it goes to copy the files for the windows installation and the computer just restarts. We know its not the hard drive and not the video card, power supply has enough watts to handle everything, i reflashed the bios and checked all the connections... So the only things really left are the motherboard and RAM. If the ram was bad i would think we would have freezing and restarting problems at other times also not just at that one point. I pretty much tried everything to get windows to load to no avail. Sometimes instead of just rebooting it would give us a blue screen saying that setupdd.sys caused the error.(its not the CD cause i tried other ones) We also tried hooking up the HD to his other computer, we went into windows setup and successfully copied the files to the HD (when it asks you to restart the system and then it goes into the real setup) we then put the drive back into the comp and it would boot from the HD and just go to a black screen. I think the motherboard is shot, at least the HD controller or something like that.. what else might it be?

buy a mac!

ASUS + AMD.
that's my answer, you pick the particular board and chip speed.
AMD is a better value.
do you really need RAID?
is this a production/business 'puter that requires that type of backup?
AMD chips are usually unlocked and ASUS has a pretty good bios overclocking setup.
just don't get onboard video, it's usually shared and saps the power to compute unless you have gazillions of Ram.
the other thing is:
I'd wait on buying a 64 bit processor. it's basically a waste of money until programs catch up and start using it. you can save yourself hundreds...
trust me, early adopters have smaller bank accounts!!

Don't you mean take a 2nd mortgage out for a mac?

With RAID 1 you get twice the read rate with equal transfer rate. Not the mention the redundancy that everyone should be opting for these days and the ease of replacement.

The 240s are very affordable and in every comparison review I have seen thus far the 64-bit processors running 32-bit applications still performed better then the native 32-bit processors. At $1500 for a full DUAL system the price is equal if not less depending on configuration.
I will admit that not many ppl can use the dual processors but I don't build shit computers. I guess that's a hint at how I feel about single processor computers.

h0tk4rl:
we could debate this forever.
I don't know Avo's needs/purpose for his computer.
it just seems like overkill to me. (IMHO)
although... if someone wants to GIVE ME that setup, I'll gladly give away one of my computers to make room

Just ordered the Intel 875 I have two other comps with that board and they Rock.
The Abit is tempting, if they were the same price if could of went the other way.

The Abit board is not as good as there past boards. Very prone to lock ups and video conflicts. The Intel board is excellent and currently the fasteset board out of the box. Match up with some WD Raptor SATA 150 drives at 10k rpm's an you will have real fast machine...another good board is the asus p4800-e deluxe (I think that is the right model #) For the money I would recommend the Intel. Just remember that the only thing onboard is the gigabit lan.

What do you think of the new Prescott 2.8 3.2 .3.4 chips that are comming out?
I bought the Intel p875 and now its works great. I have two other comps with the same board with a 120G SATA HD. The next Sata will be the Hitachi 36g 15k for this new board. Im curently running a 80 wd 8mg buffer on it.
eh.. I would of went with Abit or Tyan, maybe even Asus.. Jay knows what he's talking about so I wont even bother to give my 2 cents. He made enough sense.

I have heard that Intel already has it's product line ready for the next few years and is really just waiting for the software to warrant it. Here is a review of the 3.2 from PCWorld. http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114546,00.asp. Good luck with that new machine..it sounds like it will be pretty sweet. Let me know.

teh puter restarting sounds like an ACPI problem - turn it off then try to reinstall - or update the bios so that it supports acpi - this a common problem we ran into trying to get xp loaded on older boards. If it's not that then yeah - bad mobo or ram.
